Midi de la Méditerranée – Migrations between the Maghreb and Europe

To begin this new year, the Midis de la Méditerranée were pleased to welcome for the second time Professor Bichara Khader. Professor in the Department of Political Science at the Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve, he is also Director of the Center for Study and Research on the Contemporary Arab World (CERMAC).

Professor Khader addressed the complex issue of migration between the Maghreb and Europe. First briefly tracing the history of migration, he explained the three phases of migration from North Africa to Europe before discussing some aspects of European policy on immigration. The questions from the public then focused the debate on the issues of jobs, security, on the paradoxes of European policy on migration and on the future prospects concerning migrations.
