Midi de la Méditerranée – The energy dependence of the EU: Reinforcing the Euro-Arab relations?

The Midis de la Méditerranée on Monday, October 19, 2009, hosted Roland Kobia from the Cabinet of Andris Piebalgs, the European Commissioner for Energy and Transport. His speech focused on the importance of the Mediterranean to the energy security policy pursued by the European Union.

The Russian gas crisis of January 2009 has strengthened the Commission’s view that the EU should diversify its sources and means of supply. The Mediterranean region is crucial for the development of this strategy with the first major project of a southern corridor, called Nabucco, secondly with the solar plan which is one of the priorities of the young Union for Mediterranean.
