Midi de la Méditerranée – Middle East in all its states

As part of the Midis de la Méditerranée, the European Movement Belgium and MEDEA Institute had the great pleasure to welcome Professor Antoine Sfeir on December 8, 2010, that came to present a « Middle East in all its states. » His speech particularly emphasized the communitarianism that characterizes more and more the region and makes it a risky region. The antagonism is strengthened between Muslims and Christians, but also within Islam, between Sunnis and Shiites. The desire to live together seems to have disappeared. Projects that lead to inter-community or interreligious dialogue no longer echo.

Dominique Baudis, MEP and President of the Arab World Institute has responded to the intervention of Mr. Sfeir recalling that hope, however, remains with the launch of the Union for the Mediterranean by N. Sarkozy. This project must promote dialogue between countries of North, South and East Mediterranean. Despite political obstacles, he believes that the Union has already met with great successes and is meant to play a political lever.

It is a high-ranking and seeking clarification public that attended the conference and participated in the debate.
