The army in Egypt has warned it will not allow the country to descend into « uncontrollable conflict ». The comments by army chief Gen Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi came a week ahead of planned mass protests by opponents of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

After months of rumours and speculation, the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, has formally handed power to his son, Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, as part of an ordered transition that appears to have been many months in the making.

The Syrian authorities must drop charges against five human rights activists whose « patently unfair » terror trial was today put on hold for another two months, said Amnesty International.

Members of a dominant Kurdish party have shot at a protest in the Syrian Kurdish-dominated town of Amuda, killing at least three people and leaving at least 10 others injured, activists have told Al Jazeera.
