Convention on the prohibition of anti personnel mines

Also called « The Ottawa Treaty », the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpilling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction was signed in the Canadian capital on 4 December 1997 and entered into force on 1 March 1999, after the required 40 States had ratified it in December 1998.

The 1997 treaty banning the use, production, stockpiling, and transfer of antipersonnel landmines has been ratified by 141 countries (signed by 150). Since the treaty became law, countries may no longer sign it, they must accede. Those countries which have already signed, must still ratify in order to be fully bound by the ban provisions

Every year, there is a UN General Assembly resolution in support of the total ban on antipersonnel landmines.

As far as Arab countries are concerned, Bahrain,  Egypt, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Syria, United Arab Emirates have not yet signed the Treaty.

  • Israel has not signed this convention yet.
  • Finland has not signed the Treaty.
  • China, Russia and the USA have not signed nor ratified it.
