The Parliament of Comoros is unicameral.

  • Name of Parliament: Federal Assembly (Assemblée Fédérale)
  • Number of Seats: 43
  • Term of legislature: 4 years
  • Required age for voting: 18
  • Required age for membership: 21

The 43 members of the Federal Assembly are directly elected in 43 single-member constituencies by a majority vote in two rounds. A candidate is elected if he obtains an absolute majority at the first round or a simple majority at the second. Voting is not compulsory.

Last legislative elections: 1 and 8 December 1996.

On 20 October 1996, a new Constitution was approved by referendum. A few days later, the opposition political forces, united in a "Forum Federation" announced that they would boycott the elections.

The opposition parties characterized these elections as a "masquerade".

There is no woman in this Assembly.
