Elections and Parliament

The Parliament of Djibouti is unicameral.

  • Name of Parliament: National Assembly (Assemblée Nationale)
  • Number of seats: 65
  • Term of legislature: 5 years
  • Required age for voting: 18
  • Required age for membership: 23

Deputies are elected in 5 multi-member constituencies corresponding to the country’s five administrative districts. Representation is apportioned according to the population. The election is based on a party-list simple majority vote in one round of voting, without vote-splitting or preferential vote.

According to the Constitution, the number of contending parties is limited to four.

Last legislative elections: 19 December 1997.

The ruling RPP is allied with a faction of FRUD - whose main leaders were arrested in October 1997.

The President of the Assembly is Said Ibrahim Badoul.

There is no woman in this Assembly.
