Of the 360 members of the National Assembly,

• 270 are directly elected in constituencies
• There are 35 representatives of the women
• There are 26 representatives of the university graduates
• There are 29 representatives of the trade unions

The June 1989 military Coup d’Etat of islamist orientation resulted in the dissolution of the National Assembly and the ban of all political parties. Since then, a civil war opposes the regime and factions based in Southern Sudan (where lives a majority Animist and Christian populations).

In February 1992, a 300-member Transitional National Assembly was appointed to act as a law-making body.

The last elections of 13 and 23 December 2000 were the first held under the new Constitution approved in 1998, which permitted the existence of ‘political associations’ (political parties). However, the elections were boycotted by the main opposition parties.

In three states of the south, under the control of rebels after two decades of civil war, elections did not take place.

The European union declined the invitation to monitor the elections. The Arab League of states and the Organisation of African unity did sent observers. The observers declared that elections had been conducted satisfactorily despite boycott by some major political parties.

The President of the Assembly is Ahmed Ibrahim Al-Tahir.

There are 35 women sitting in the Assembly, representing 9.7% of the total members.
